Title: Test Demo
Description: rate my Game Maker skillz!
Egocentric Utensil - February 15, 2008 06:10 PM (GMT)
Right-click, save target as.Arrow keys to move, Z and X for sword attacks, Ctrl to lock onto enemies, shift to block, and shift + arrow keys to dodge.
So, basically, I'm considering entering the YoYo Games competition. This is what I have of my game so far. It still needs a lot of debugging, I just want to know what ya'll think of it so far. PLZ RATE KTHX

It doesn't work for me...

Lol I can win at this so cheaply...
It's fun to bait all of the knights in to one area and just keep smacking them. Your hands get sore tho...
Anyway. Graphics. And more interesting gameplay. Because just running through crowds of knights swinging a sword isn't that fun. Though entertaining...

Lulz. You know me. :P

But of course. I'll have a more diverse arrow of attacks and better AI before too long. I just wanted to make sure that the slashing-while-running thing isn't too much to get used to. Which, if you found the demo to be easy, I'm assuming it's not.
Lyger - February 23, 2008 10:30 PM (GMT)
And does "lock on" actually work?
What's your ratio going to be? 2x or more or actual size (for the sprites)? Seeing as your elf and knights are all at least 2x (didn't bother to check actual ratio).
Egocentric Utensil - February 23, 2008 11:35 PM (GMT)
Actually, no, it doesn't work. When you're locked on, you always face the enemy closest to you. Which isn't exactly what I want. I'm making it so that when you lock on to one enemy, you stay on him until you change to a different one.
2x. I've got the view so it's zoomed in 200%.
Lyger - February 24, 2008 02:49 AM (GMT)
Sure don't look like it for the trees. Unless I have a bad memory. Sprites were definitely more zoomed than trees tho.
You plan on keeping these sprites?
Egocentric Utensil - February 24, 2008 06:10 PM (GMT)
Nope, the trees are zoomed too.

I probably will keep the sprites I have, unless, by some miracle I manage to make something better. Dunno. Depends on how much time is left in the contest when I finish the game.
Lyger - February 25, 2008 08:26 PM (GMT)
Nooo... your characters are definitely 2x larger than your scenery. I checked. They only move by the same amount of pixels as your scenery, as in the breathing anim, but the different aspect ratios looks very awkward, I suggest changing it. I could whip up some stuff if you'd like.
Egocentric Utensil - February 25, 2008 10:32 PM (GMT)
That wouldn't even be physically possible. I didn't change any of the sizes. All I did was stretch out the size of the screen from 400x300 to 800x600. Doing the former, it looks like
this. Doing the latter, it looks like
this. I think I know what might be happening, though - I think that Game Maker sometimes might be making the edges around some of the sprites look a little thinner, which is what's causing that effect.
Still, if you could Lygify some of my sprites, that would be awesome. Just don't make them
too awesome, or I won't be able to keep up with your style. :P

That's all I've got so far. And you don't have to do all of them, of course.
Lyger - February 25, 2008 11:03 PM (GMT)
Grass is fine, I suck at grass anyway.

It's a tree. Bit small, though, I think. If you keep it the same ratio as your sprite it should be fine tho.
Giddy Fork - February 25, 2008 11:19 PM (GMT)
MMZ Style!
I haven't seen that in a while...
Egocentric Utensil - February 26, 2008 02:25 AM (GMT)
Waaay better than mine. Thanks Lyg. :)
Egocentric Utensil - February 28, 2008 03:54 AM (GMT)
I've updated the demo a little.
http://www.freewebs.com/lepicagaming/TestDemo2.exe- Combat system updated.
- Some bugs fixed.
- Locking works better.
- You can shoot arrows now - hold C and press X repeatedly.
- Shift locks onto enemies now, and ctrl blocks... though that isn't really working, for some reason.
- Started on the village. Press F7 to see what I have of it so far.
Also, Lyg, your tree kind of didn't fit with the rest of the environment. At its normal size, it's too small, increasing it x2, it's too big.

Doesn't work for me either.

What happens when you try to play it?
Biobylon 5 - March 23, 2008 09:20 PM (GMT)
It starts opening and then it closes. It may be because I have too many windows open.
